If you have lost teeth through gum disease, tooth decay or accident, then there are a number of ways of replacing the missing teeth. Traditional methods of treatment such as dentures and bridges can provide a cost effective means of replacing the teeth and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Dental implants provide a permanent replacement for missing teeth. A small titanium screw is inserted into your jaw bone under local anaesthetic; in the weeks immediately following the procedure, it knits painlessly with the bone forming a secure foundation for new natural looking teeth. Either a single or, if necessary, several implants can be used to support:
-
A crown, either screwed or cemented to the implant
-
A bridge, either screwed or cemented to the implant(s)
-
A denture which securely clips to the implants but is removable for cleaning
Dental implants have a number of advantages over traditional dental restorations:
-
They look, feel and function like natural teeth
-
They are a stable foundation for crowns, bridges and dentures
-
Adjacent healthy teeth do not need to be cut down
-
They can help prevent bone loss, maintaining facial features
-
Implant supported dentures, unlike traditional dentures, have no palate and therefore have a positive effect on speech and taste
-
Dental implants are a permanent tooth replacement.
